Build Community With Great Writers

Community, Deadlines, and Accountability

This hybrid advanced fiction workshop (50/50 in person and Zoom) takes advantage of the benefits of in-person classes (strong personal connections in the cohort, the experience of “hanging out” and talking about writing without being on camera), and the benefits of Zoom (small groups, screen-sharing, no traffic/parking, and general convenience (pajama bottoms and a nice shirt).

This class is dedicated to fostering accountability and will feature regular deadlines where you are compelled to turn in pages. Everyone in your new writing community is depending on you! This class is focused on building a strong cohort for peer review, and pushing your work toward a publishable quality.

DESCRIPTION

This advanced yearlong in fiction is primarily for people who’ve taken other writing classes before, or worked with a coach — i.e. people with some familiarity with writing craft concepts. That said, I’ve had advanced students in the past who had no experience in writing classes, and it was fine.

There will be fewer craft classes, although we will occasionally take a break from workshop to do a prompt, or read a story/excerpt, or have an in-depth discussion on a specific craft concept, or if there’s something newsworthy afoot in the literary world.

This class is focused on building a strong cohort for peer review, and pushing your work toward a publishable quality.

Here’s what you can expect from classes:

  • Community: You’re surrounded by a community of enthusiastic writers with writing experience

  • Peer review: Your classmates and I will workshop your most recent writing

  • Accountability: Small-group and class deadlines help you keep up the pace

  • Assigned reading: Examine craft questions through short stories and novel excerpts, as well as craft essays.

  • Prompts: In-class writing to kickstart new ideas or scenes, or experiment with a new technique

  • Narrative Structure Reflection: For those interested in structuring novels and stories

  • Publishing opportunities: Professional advancement opportunities in the writing world

NOTE: This class includes complimentary access to my publishing intensive webinar, value of $200 (Meets twice, recording is available for those who can’t attend: Jan 19 and 26, 9am to noon; guests TBD.)

Thank you!
