Exclusive writing tips, hints, and resources

The first principle of writing is that you must somehow engage the reader’s attention — this is the generosity of our art. We work for our reader's attention to make their effort worthwhile.  If you don't grab and hold your readers’ attention, nothing else matters.

You can have lovely characters, wonderful sentences, and so on, but if that primary thing hasn't been achieved, it's never going to fly.

It’s like getting the ball over the net in tennis. Being able to get it over the net doesn’t make you a pro, but without that ability, you’re not really playing tennis.

I’m here to help with all aspects of writing, from idea to publication and beyond, but our work has to be centered around this central concept that your first objective is to arrest and hold a stranger's attention with your words.
